The American

Erykah Badu

Soul and R&B singer Erykah Badu is still dealing with the fallout from her controversial music video "Window Seat," in which the singer disrobed at the site where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Badu has paid a $500 fine and will serve six months' probation for stripping off her clothes to film the music video in her hometown of Dallas. The 39-year-old music star had been charged with disorderly conduct in April over her nude video shoot in Dealey Plaza. Badu agreed with prosecutors to serve probation that will end February 11.
In "Window Seat," Badu sheds all her clothes throughout the course of the song as she walks and runs through the plaza. At the end, a gunshot rings out and she collapses to the ground naked, as blue blood spills out to form the word "groupthink."

The books continue the same murder conspiracy storyline.

Deadline revealed that Craig was signed a deal with two options weeks ago to play Mikael Blomkvist, the investigative journalist and part owner of the magazine Millennium, and Deadline also broke the story that Robin Wright was in talks to play Erika Berger, his occasional bed partner and the publisher of Millennium. Stellan Skarsgard was also reportedly in talks to play Martin Vanger, who joins the magazine's board.

The search for Salander has been the role that really captured the public fancy. Slight of frame and short, Salander is a brilliant but troubled computer hacker who helps Blomkvist unravel a decades-long murder mystery. The storyline is as dark as the subject matter that Fincher tackled in Seven, and subsequent books establish Salander as far more than Blomkvist's sidekick (and occasional lover). While established actresses have been named as being in contention for the role -- Natalie Portman (who tried to buy the books early on), Ellen Page (who filmed her own test), Carey Mulligan and most recently Scarlett Johansson -- Fincher has focused his testing process on discovering an actress who fits Salander physically and in age proximity, which is early 20s. Mara was among a group of young actresses that included Alice In Wonderland star Mia Wasikowska, Sucker Punch's Emily Browning (even though neither actress signed test deals), Fish Tank's Katie Jarvis. Mara tested along with Sophie Lowe, Sarah Snook and French actress Lea Seydoux.

Mara is a strong match: she is the right age and looks like Salander. She also had the advantage of working with Fincher and Rudin on The Social Network. The sister of Brokeback Mountain's Kate Mara and the great granddaughter of New York Giants football team founder Wellington Mara and Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney, Mara was most recently seen in the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Aarti Sequeira took home the title of "The Next Food Network Star" on Sunday (Aug. 15) finale, beating out Tom Pizzica and Herb Mesa,after 10 grueling weeks.

The final challenge was taping a three minute pilot (directed by Food Network personality Rachael Ray), which would then be judged by a focus group. Sequeira's nerves were almost her undoing for a bit there, but after a little advice from Ray, she pulled it together and delivered a charming and upbeat pilot. All three finalists received positive reactions from the focus group, although one person mentioned Sequeira seemed to be rushing.

The star of her own food blog brought that passion for cooking in front of the cameras, overcoming more experienced chefs and self doubt. Her culinary point of view is infusing Indian flavors and techniques into everyday American cooking.


She won't get to rest on her laurels for long. In a week's time, her show "Aarti Paarti" will debut on the Food Network.

One of the first things you'll notice is the 3.7-inch display. This is one of the largest available -- bigger than the one on the HTC Touch Pro2, and slightly higher resolution, too. In fact, it's of a much higher resolution than all the earlier Android models, which have HVGA screens.

The display is ideal for looking at web sites, images, and video, whether you're inside out out.

Naturally, Android supports both portrait and landscape modes in all applications. And the Droid has a sensor that detects which way you're holding it, and gives you the appropriate orientation. However, opening the slider turns the sensor off and puts the screen into landscape mode.

Because the keyboard has a landscape orientation, it's of a decent size. On the other hand, the keys are all set in a flat surface, with little or no space between, which isn't an ideal arrangement. After a week I've grown accustomed to it, but some roundness or space between keys would be nice. Still, some sacrifices had to be made to keep the overall shape so slim.

There's a large D-pad next to the keyboard -- that placement means it's only available when the slider is open. This isn't the best design for one-handed use, as the D-pad isn't available in portrait mode. Because I use the D-pad frequently, I find myself using the Droid with the keypad open most of the time.

There's a sort of "chin" to the right of the keyboard, which you have to reach around to type or use the D-pad. This isn't any kind of hassle to me, and to be honest I hadn't even noticed it until someone pointed it out.

When the Droid's slider is closed, you can use an on-screen keyboard. This allows yo to enter short amounts of text with the device in portrait mode, though this keyboard is so cramped you are going to want to pull out the physical one to enter more than a few words.

The on-screen keyboard is also available in landscape mode, where it is much more usable. This raises an interesting possibility: if you prefer virtual keyboards to physical ones, or just don't like the Droid's hardware keyboard, you can use the on-screen keyboard to enter all your text. I prefer hardware keyboards, but the Droid's virtual one is nearly as usable, as long as it's in landscape mode.

This smartphone has comparatively few dedicated buttons.

Built into the touchscreen are four control buttons: Search, Home, Menu, and Back. The traditional Call and Disconnect buttons are conspicuously absent. You have to depend on on-screen buttons for this.

There's also a power button on top, plus a volume control rocker and camera button on the right side.
The Droid's 3.5mm headset jack is easily accessible on top. I wish I could say the same about its microSD memory card slot. That's buried in a place that requires you to remove the battery to switch cards.

This device gets its power from a micro-USB port, and comes with a combination charging and data cable and travel-size charger, a nice touch.

As far a build quality goes, the device feels solid in most ways, but the slider on my unit is just a tiny bit loose.

Alto K-Series, new car of Maruti Suzuki will be launched on the 4th August 2010 in new Delhi. Suzuki motors has put their newest Indian offering the Alto K-Series on display at the IIMS 2010 Indonesia. Solar storm hitting Earth causes spectacular aurora displays

A large solar storm has caused spectacular aurora displays across the Northern Hemisphere after blasting out of the Sun three days ago.

On 1 August, almost the entire side of the Sun that faces the Earth erupted in a blaze of activity known as a "coronal mass ejection". These storms throw up to 10 billion tons of plasma - superheated gas - off the surface of the star and hurtling into space at around a million miles an hour. It covered the 93 million mile journey from the Sun to the Earth in just three and a half days.

It was the "first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time," according to Leon Golub, a scientist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), who warned of the event on Monday.

The flare which caused the eruption was relatively small, described as a class C3 by astronomers. Other flares, known as X or M class, are much larger, and capable of doing damage on Earth. C-class flares rarely have much effect on Earth beyond auroras - the glowing displays towards the poles, like the Northern (and Southern) Lights.

Dramatic auroras were seen in Denmark, Norway, Greenland, Germany and across the northern United States and Canada as the expanding bubble of gas slammed into the Earth's atmosphere. The frequently beautiful displays are caused by the charged particles in the plasma interacting with the Earth's magnetic field - the solar matter is drawn towards the poles, where they collide with nitrogen and oxygen atoms in the atmosphere.

While no damage seems to have been done by this flare, Nasa astronomers have previously warned that a much larger solar storm could cause havoc with electrical systems on Earth. In 2013, the Sun is expected to reach a stage in its roughly 11-year cycle when large storms are more likely.

In 1859, one huge flare burned out telegraph wires across Europe and the USA. The so-called "Carrington flare", named after its discoverer, “smothered two-thirds of the Earth’s skies in a blood-red aurora a night later, and crippled all global navigation and global communication, such as it was at that time. Compasses spun uselessly and the telegraph network went down as phantom electricity surged through the wire,” according to Dr Stuart Clark, author of The Sun Kings.

More recently, in 1989, a smaller but still enormous storm caused the power grids in Quebec to go down for nine hours, causing hundreds of millions' worth of dollars in lost revenue.

New BlackBerry Software Not Friendly With Older Touchscreens

BlackBerry introduced a new operating system Tuesday that is designed to work better with touchscreens, which are increasingly popular on smartphones.

But in the list of older phones compatible with this touchscreen-friendly system, two devices are conspicuously absent: BlackBerry’s own older touchscreen phones.

BlackBerry’s newest phone, the Torch, has a touchscreen and will come with the BlackBerry 6 operating system. The Torch, which also made its debut Tuesday, combines a the screen with a slide-out keyboard to entice BlackBerry’s traditional business user.

But the latest operating system is leaving the older touchscreens — the Storm and Storm 2 — behind, despite the fact that the Storm 2 came out only late last year. BlackBerry acknowledged that the new system does not work on the Storm phones.

BlackBerry users have been clamoring for an update to the old operating system, which lagged behind the iPhone and Android platforms in features. In particular, it offered users far fewer apps. The new platform also makes improvements in the way BlackBerry users can tap into social networks like Facebook and media from iTunes and Windows Media Player.

Storm owners might be out of luck — but the devices weren’t a big hit, anyway. The Storm, which came out in 2008, faced complaints of glitches, and by the time the Storm 2 came out, it was considered behind the times.

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion did not comment on why the operating system might not be compatible with the phones. But the Electronista blog speculates that the Storm’s use of a “click-down” screen, intended to make typing on the screen feel more like typing on a keyboard, could be a problem.

Phones that will be able to run the new software include the Bold 9700, the Bold 9650 and the Pearl 3G, BlackBerry says. The company did not specify when the operating system would be available for these phones, except to say that it would be “in the months ahead.”

Iran's Ahmadinejad survives blast near motorcade

TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad survived an attack with a homemade explosive device on his motorcade during a visit to the western city of Hamadan on Wednesday, a source in his office said.

The source said Ahmadinejad's convoy was targeted as he was traveling from Hamadan's airport to give a speech in a local sports arena and the president was unhurt but others had been injured in the blast.

One person had been arrested, the presidency source said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The populist, hard-line Ahmadinejad has accumulated enemies in conservative and reformist circles in the Islamic Republic as well as abroad.

Al Arabiya television said an attacker had thrown a bomb at Ahmadinejad's convoy before being detained.

Dubai-based Al Arabiya television cited its own sources as saying the bomb had hit a car carrying journalists and presidential staff.

Ahmadinejad appeared on live Iranian television at a sports stadium in Hamadan. He was apparently well and made no mention of any assault.

During a speech to a conference of expatriate Iranians in Tehran on Monday, Ahmadinejad said he believed he was the target of an assassination plot by Israel. "The stupid Zionists have hired mercenaries to assassinate me," he said.

The oil market initially reacted calmly to reports of the attempted attack.

One energy analyst said: "People are just waiting to see what this is about - to confirm the nature of the action."

Ahmadinejad recently sought to isolate rival political factions by declaring that "the regime has only one party, which is the velayat" -- a reference to Shi'ite Islam's hidden Imam, for now represented by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

One of Ahmadinejad's trademarks has been constant travel around his vast country to deliver provocative speeches before outwardly adoring crowds who shout "death" to Iran's foes.

Israel-Lebanon Clash: UN Calls For Restraint

The UN has called for Israel and Lebanon to exercise the "utmost restraint" after a border skirmish resulted in fatalities on both sides.

The US also voiced concern over the clash, which led to the worst bloodshed since the 2006 conflict with Lebanon terror group Hizbollah.

The incident on Tuesday left two Lebanese soldiers and a Lebanese journalist dead, as well as a senior Israeli officer.

Both sides gave different accounts about the skirmish, but the UN peacekeepers have disputed the Lebanese claim that Israeli soldiers breached the border.

"The last thing that we want to see is that this incident expand into something more significant," warned US State Department spokesman PJ Crowley.

The UN Security Council expressed its "deep concern" about the incident and called on the two countries to "practice utmost restraint".
It also urged the two parties to remember their obligations under the resolution that ended hostilities in 2006 - including a ban on all unauthorised weapons between the Litani River and the Blue Line border.

The Blue Line border was identified in 2000 as the area of demarcation between the two countries and it is monitored by the UN.

In its version of events, the Lebanese army said it fired rocket-propelled grenades after an Israeli patrol crossed the technical line of the border, despite commands from UN peacekeepers telling them to stop.

However, Israel's UN ambassador Daniel Carmon explained the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) were simply pruning a tree whose branches were tripping an electric fence on a road 80 metres south of the Blue Line.

He added that despite notifying UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon "well in advance of its plans", Lebanese snipers fired shots over the border.

A colonel was killed and another officer was seriously wounded.

UN peacekeepers have since confirmed the Israeli soldiers were cutting back a cypress tree that was indeed in their territory.

Following the skirmish further casualties were reported after a pre-dawn Israeli airstrike.

The Israeli military claim it fired after seeing a group of men approach the border. One man was killed and another injured.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: "Israel has responded and shall respond aggressively in the future to any attempt to disrupt the calm along the northern border or to harm residents of the north or the soldiers protecting them."

Hizbollah's chief Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah told supporters via video link: "I say honestly, that in any place where the Lebanese army will be assaulted and there's a presence for the resistance, and it is capable, the resistance will not stand silent, or quiet or restrained."

There has been tension in recent months on the Israeli-Lebanon border following reports Hizbollah was stockpiling weapons.
